It was not exactly urgent to get the rug, but the larger question the rug had to answer was urgent enough. She had recently moved out of the large home she shared with her husband and child in Silver Lake and into a small two-bedroom house behind her writing studio in Echo Park. We were just getting acquainted as she carefully merged on and off a series of highways in her blue Toyota Prius. There was going to be traffic — of course there would be traffic — and it began to dawn on us that this was going to be a long drive. In such close quarters, Ms. July suggested we might define the terms of our relationship more clearly.

First-quarter earnings season is just getting started, but investors may want to keep a close eye on a group of stocks at risk of a profit "blowup," according to Wolfe Research. The basket includes stocks that show up most often in the firm's short screens and filters companies based on earnings quality with 0 the worst and 100 the best. Tesla scores a 2 on Wolfe Research's earnings quality scale, showing up six times on the firm's short screens. Wolfe Research named Pinterest as another short idea, saying it was on four of the firm's short screens. Both stocks appear on four of the firm's short screens and have earnings quality scores in the 20s.

Naghibi envisions community bank branches with fewer employees and more AI. The bank is also exploring the use of generative AI in software engineering, customer service and ways to boost employee productivity. However, even as stocks have climbed higher, investors are worried there could be a pullback, financial advisors say. For investors who have gravitated toward cash, certificates of deposit, or bonds, a pullback may be an opportunity to deploy those funds in the market, Kourkafas said. "The stock market is a long-term investment," said Jenkin, who is also a member of CNBC's Financial Advisor Council. But the $6,000 in BNPL loans she'd racked up over roughly two years felt frivolous, she said, especially because they're planning to buy their first home. Many are seeking cover from high credit card interest rates. After trimming her discretionary spending and sticking to home-cooked meals, she said she's been able to whittle down her BNPL debt to about $1,200. Klarna said it had responsible spending limits for its users, whose average outstanding balance is $150, compared to the more than $6,000 for credit card users. Baird, for her part, acknowledged BNPL services can make inflation and high interest rates feel "easier" for those who can keep their shopping impulses under control.

Former President Donald J. Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, has repeatedly attacked central elements of the Inflation Reduction Act, including tax credits for purchasing electric vehicles. “Otherwise it’s all going to be on the chopping block.”The Inflation Reduction Act contains various tax credits and other subsidies to incentivize companies to deploy more clean energy projects. It also includes tax breaks for consumers to offset the cost of electric vehicles, heat pumps and other energy-efficient appliances. That could cut the number of eligible vehicles, potentially hindering progress toward the Biden administration’s goal of having electric vehicles make up half of new car sales by 2030. The estimated cost of the Inflation Reduction Act’s energy incentives has effectively doubled since it passed, largely because forecasters believe the legislation will be more popular than they originally expected.
